March 2018 Newsletter
Regrettably the “Beast from the East” and Storm Emma combined with subsequent heavy rain and a silted up drainage ditch have proved to be a “Perfect Storm” as far as the condition of the course is concerned. All of these factors are outside our control and as Chris Rawlings says “I’ve been here for some 10 years and there are now ditches running with water that have previously stayed dry in the wettest of winters. We’ll get the course open as much as possible but we don’t want to damage it in a way that affects the rest of the year and frankly at the moment (12th March) it would be dangerous to play on.”
The drainage ditch referred to above is on “Wales Highways” land and whilst they have acknowledged the problem and their responsibility, as a result of hibernating Dormice and the very wet ground they are not in a position to rectify the problem at the moment. They have however promised to dredge the ditch before next winter – we will do our very best to ensure they keep their word. Fingers crossed for some warm and dry weather to encourage grass and tree growth.
Annual General Meeting
Despite the recent bad weather the club’s AGM on 7th March was well attended. A full report of proceedings is on our website. Captains and officers for the year are:
President : Walter Phillips
Congratulations and many thanks to all for accepting their respective responsibilities and please do your best to support them throughout the year.
In a break with tradition this year all 3 Captains have agreed that they would support the same charity. The chosen charity is Wales Air Ambulance and Carl Pugh has already started to raise funds – he is competing in the Newport Half Marathon on 29th April and sponsorship forms are available in the clubhouse.
There will be events throughout the year with regard to fundraising and further details will follow in due course.
Captains’ Drive In
“Captains’ Drive In” will take place on Saturday 7th April. Proceedings will start around midday and include the drive in that all new Captains dread (No barracking please – well not too much!) followed by the Warren Mixed competition open to all.
The theme for the day is “All Things Fly” and there will be prizes for the best Fancy Dressed golfers on the day.
The Captains look forward to meeting as many of you as possible on the day so please “come on down” even if it’s only for a drink and a chat.,/p>
Pro-Am Competition 3rd August 2018
Plans for the day continue to progress well and we have emailed all relevant clubs in the area to publicise the event.
We would like to involve as many local and not so local businesses as possible – do you have any contacts that we could ask for sponsorship or to enter a team? Please let Colin Guyton know on email@example.com
As ever any volunteers for help either before or on the day would be gratefully received and entry forms are available on the website or from Chris Murphy
Carl Pugh is looking to arrange a weekly Pilates session at the club but he needs 5 people or more (Male or Female) to join him on a regular basis. Carl has arranged a taster session for 11:30am on Tuesday 29th March 2018 – the taster session is free and should last about an hour.
Pilates is suitable for all ages and can greatly help improve body flexibility - might even help the golf swing. If you are interested or would like more details please speak to Carl in the clubhouse or contact him on firstname.lastname@example.org
The lottery continues on a weekly basis even if the course is closed so don’t forget to get your tickets. If you would like to set up a weekly/monthly standing order to avoid missing a draw please email email@example.com. As well as a cash jackpot you could win a year’s subscription to Raglan Parc Golf Club.
The winning numbers are posted on the website and for the week ended 4th March were 6 – 7 – 9 – 23 and 11th March 6 – 10 – 23 – 24. Neither draw produced a winner.
